May Madness - Quarterfinals

Last week had blowouts, upsets, and close calls; Round 2 should also not disappoint

Read Round 1 preview here

Virginia vs. Georgetown

UVA cruised into the quarters (or should say hydroplaned, considering the weather and field conditions) with a win over Richmond. Georgetown avenged last year’s first round demon by surviving a shootout against Yale. I still think UVA wins, but this could be another high scoring affair.

Winner: UVA Confidence Level: 5

Duke vs. Michigan

Duke narrowly averted a major upset in Round 1. Delaware put up a great fight and Duke had to overcome a halftime deficit to squeak by. Michigan is continuing their Cinderella Story by beating Cornell in OT. That win was made even sweeter due to the fact the overtime winner was scored by a hometown kid. Duke has shown that they are vulnerable at times but I still think they end Michigan’s fairy tale season.

Winner: Duke Confidence Level: 7

Penn St. vs. Army

Army upset defending champs, Maryland, and I am kicking myself for not picking them last week. The Black Knights advance to meet the Nittany Lions. This is the only game that does not include an ACC team. I originally had PSU beating Maryland here and am taking them again over Army.

Winner: Penn St. Confidence Level: 6

Notre Dame vs. Hopkins

The Irish and Blue Jays each easily handled Utah and Bryant, respectively. Now they get to face off against each other. I have not seen anything that indicates the Irish are anything short of a championship team. I think Hopkins as done a great job getting back into the playoff mix, but it would take a Herculean effort to pull of an upset here.

Winner: ND Confidence Level: 9

As mentioned in last week's post, and considering I'm picking all three ACC teams to win again, it's no surprise the conference is quite strong. That was supported again this week when the All-American teams were announced.
